*If you have ever been interested in becoming a mentor for queer youth or a foster parent, this informational session is for you. You don't need to have interest in both to attend this short event.
Mentor Recruitment:
Have you heard the scary statistics associated with Queer youth?
Did you know that when they know that you are there for them, they not only survive; they thrive!
Wouldn’t you like to be a part of caring community of LGBTIQQA adults who actively work to support our mentees as they navigate the teen years and figure out WHO they are?
As a One on One Mentor You will:
- · Be matched with a Queer mentee who wants to connect with YOU.
- · Introduce your mentee to your interests and learn about theirs.
- · Discover new interests together with your mentee and create memories that will last (both of you) a lifetime.
- · Utilize your own talents to help mentees foster their own.
- · Model good behavior and healthy relationships.
- · Know that you are actively working to create a world where youth, adults and families of all sexual orientations and gender identities are valued and affirmed.
Did you know that along with the One on One Mentoring Program,
True Colors also has a Group Mentoring Program?
The Group Mentoring Program is a great fit for someone who has limited time to commit and still wants to mentor. Group Mentors introduce LGBTIQQA youth who may be on the waiting list for a One on One Mentor, or may only be interested in the group program, to each other and the larger Queer community through monthly activities and events. Our Group Mentors are
committed volunteers who work together to help foster a positive, safe, and healthy introduction to the various communities that we represent through social and educational events.
Group Mentors participate in a variety of ways based on their interests, abilities, and the needs of the program.
As a Group Mentor you will:
- · Provide transportation to at least 8 events throughout the year.
- · Listen, reflect and share.
- · Take part in activities with other mentors and mentees that promote our values of Respect, Inclusion, Safety and Empowerment.
- · Participate in a range of activities from nature hikes to game nights.
- · Share your own knowledge of the Queer community with other mentors and mentees.
- · Utilize your own talents to help mentees foster their own.
- · Model good behavior and healthy relationships.
- · Know that you are actively working to create a world where youth, adults and families of all sexual orientations and gender identities are valued and affirmed.
Foster Parent Informational and Recruitment Session:
Robert Rickard and Achara Sessler from the Department of Children and Families will be here to meet and greet and answer any questions you might have about becoming a foster parent. DCF is always looking for families to become licensed foster parents. Come find out how. Also present will be some current DCF foster youth to talk about their experiences in foster care and what they look for in a family.
