NORWALK -- Calling all students in Fairfield County -- The Triangle Community Center is accepting applications for its annual scholarship.
This year's award has been increased from the previous $1,000 to $2,500 in recognition of the community center's 25th anniversary.
"We are looking for a student who has demonstrated hard work in and outside of the classroom or an LGBTQ identified or ally who has made an impression on the community," said Triangle Community Center Executive Director Anthony Crisci. "The personal identity is not as important to us, but LGBTQ are given priority as well as those who have given service to the community."
Crisci said the Triangle Community Center Scholarship was established to provide scholarship awards to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people attending accredited technical, vocational, undergraduate or graduate programs in Connecticut.
The scholarship committee will determine the award recipient and in reviewing applications, the committee will consider academic accomplishments, leadership and community service.
"While there are some LGBTQ scholarships out there, they're not as popular as say, sports scholarships," Crisci said. "It's not a fairly competitive process, but we are hoping for a good turnout from a lot of hardworking, dedicated students who choose to dedicate their time to help LGBTQ peers and help advocate."
Crisci said the scholarship committee must receive applications no later than May 15. The committee plans to review applications and awardees will be selected in mid June.
Notification will be sent to all applicants about the status of their applications by the end of June. The award check will be given to the enrolled recipient via their institution's financial aid office at the beginning of the term.
"We are looking to reward those who reach out to help the community," Crisci said. "We hope to build our scholarship fun so that we can be able to give out more than one scholarship in the future and hopefully stay at this level of $2,500. We've received quite a few applicants already."
Those who wish to apply for the scholarship are urged to send applications to: Triangle Community Center, Attn: Scholarship 618 West Ave., Suite 205, Norwalk, CT 06850.
Applications can also be mailed to: scholarship@CTgay.org
